Tuesday “Training” and Swap Net

The 147.225 Repeater’s Tuesday net primary exists to give people experience with formal nets. The Swap Net is 1st, 3rd, and 5th (if there is one) Tuesday.

The second and fourth Tuesdays are a formal net that is passed around between people. If you would like to volunteer for a session or two please contact net control. The training net should encourage proper phonetics and net operating.

The following is a sample preamble you can modify by adding or omitting sections:

This is XXX opening the 147.225 operating training session.

The purpose of this net is to help us all become more comfortable communicating and be able to assume the role of Net Control Operator. Remember we are just getting started with this training and mistakes will be common. Please do not be afraid to try. It is important operators become comfortable with phonetics and net operation. It is important to have constructive feedback before a true emergency.

If we learn protocol and practice it, when the time comes we won’t panic. But protocol should not take precedence over common sense. Some protocol will have to be set aside if someone breaks in with urgent emergency traffic.

Good operating involves:

1.) waiting for the proper time to transmit

2.) speaking clearly with a level normal voice, and not getting frustrated or excited or drifting off

3.) learning and using standard phonetics

4.) using the fewest words necessary to communicate a message or thought

As training progresses, we will add more structure like:

1. What to do if the repeater is off the air.

2. A call list with contact information,

3. A specified rotation so we all know when it’s our responsibility to participate in or run the training net.

This is XXXX. I am going to call for check-ins by callsign suffix groups. The suffix is the string of letters after the number in your call. If your suffix begins with a letter in the group that is called, please respond phonetically with your complete callsign.

For example: I’m KK4ZFL so my suffix is ZFL (Zulu Foxtrot Lima). I would have to wait until the last group (Tango through Zulu) to respond. I would give my call phonetically like this: Kilo Kilo 4 Zulu Foxtrot Lima.

We should be able to complete this process within 5 to 15 minutes. At the end of the net, the repeater will be returned to open use as directed by Net Control. Please give any comments or questions then, but only after acknowledged. Net control will still be in charge. Please give your call or suffix to be acknowledged for your comments. This is also the time to let us know if you want a turn at Net Control. Do not just start talking until after the net is closed.

We may try several ways as we learn how to refine this net.

This is _xxx_____ ( name / your call) opening the 225 Training Net.

This is a directed net. Please check in as instructed. All communications are with or directed by net control.

At this time we are practicing our operating procedure, including phonetics. We will not be practicing traffic.

Does anyone have any emergency or priority traffic?

Nothing heard (or acknowledge).

Is there anyone on limited time, or mobile station? Your call please:

I have the following stations ____________ ( read back what you have and get any full call clarification.) [example “X-ray Whiskey your full call” That station should learn to say “Whiskey 1 Alpha X-ray Whiskey W1AXW” This also fulfills any need for them to ID further until 10 minutes after they transmit again.

We’ll now take general check-ins. Any call signs suffix Alpha through Golf)? (Write down calls as you copy check-ins, if you miss something ask for clarification)
